No Worries Now

At the age of 15 Fred Scarf decided he’d like to cure cancer. “Even to me, it sounded kind of outrageous,” Scarf said looking back. But outrageous or not Fred stuck to his plan.

He learned the ins and outs of nonprofits and created the organization No Worries Now, based right out of his parents home in Southern California.

The idea was born out of Fred’s own loss. In high school his best friend, Shiri Gumbiner lost her battle with osteosarcoma (a rare form of bone cancer). When Shiri was alive she and Fred liked talked about going to prom together. Shiri didn’t make it to her prom, so Fred decided to throw one for kids just like her… in her memory.

No Worries Now

Today, No Worries Now throws proms for children and teens with life-threatening illnesses.  The night is a time for them to forget their worries, and enjoy the classic ritual of prom.

This month No Worries Now is having a Now-lloween Festival. If you’d like to attend you can get more information here, and if you’d like to help out you can check out their website for details.

You can also send one teen to prom by checking out No Worries Now’s shop- each shirt purchased pays for one teen’s ticket.

No Worries Now

And No Worries Now is also thinking big picture with plans to expand to other cities outside of California. If you’d like to request a Prom in your city click here and if you’d like to throw your own prom, No Worries Now will send you a prom in a box so you can organize your own event. For more information, or to get more involved, like No Worries Now on Facebook.

Thanks for following that outrageous plan of yours Fred, it’s turned out to be a pretty good idea.

My heroes are my dear friend Abby, her son and daughter-in-law. But in order to tell you about them I have to tell you how my journey began. I am a Veteran of the first war in Iraq. From 1988-2000 I served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves, and after 8 of those years trying to get advanced when women weren't allowed on ships, I had made no progress. In the time I was on active duty I was blessed with being stationed in Hawaii. I absolutely loved the island, the people and the weather. After that I knew I would retire there one day. Fast Forward to 2007 when our economy started to see a slump. I ended up taking a buyout with severence pay from my job and thinking it was now or never on moving back to Hawaii, I moved. I got a job right away and was loving life. Within the first 2 years, I had been laid off twice, my money was gone and I was barely scraping by working part time. I worked my way from part time to full time to survive. In 2009 we hired a new girl. Abby. She was older than me, actually has children my age. She was always smiling, very upbeat, never mad or in a bad mood and willing to do anything to help another person. Her and I became great friends. She was always there to pick me up when I had a bad day, needed advice or just wanted to vent. In 2010 Ii lost my job and next came the loss of my apartment because the owner decided to move back in. I had no income at all and ended up homeless, living in my truck. I could not find a job. I was denied unemployment. I thought I would die living in my truck. My parents helped as much as possible. But Abby, stepped up, she asked her son to allow me to stay in his home when she came there. She stayed there on her days off, living with her boyfriend on the days she worked. He and his wife agred and basically saved my life. My mom finally paid to get me home and I am so grateful to be alive, but missing my dear friends Abby, Rick and Jamie.

This is so amazing that this boy is doing this.  This goes to show that there are some kids out there who are thinking of other people and not themselves.   I hope he knows what a big difference he is making in the lifes of these sick children by giving them something they may other wise miss out on.  Prom is something that is a meorable event in a young person's life.

It is an event that most teenage girls and boys get nervous about, spend all sorts of time and money to have the right clothes, hair and nails done.  This is sometimes a event that changes onces life.    It is also a time where some young adults go out drinking and accidents happen.   All these children who have to out do the other should step back and just appreciate the event for what it is, stop trying to out do each other because this is not a beauty pagnet. Before you know it proms are behind you and what you wore or who you went with will not change the world or benefit someone in need.

God Bless Fred and all the other children out there who do for others.
