This week I came across the work of Sanna Dullaway, a 21-year-old artist from Sweden who has been giving historical photos captivating color treatments.

Here’s what Dullaway said about her artistic process on her website, “When I add colour to a photo there is much more involved than simply painting the grass green. Cool shadows and warm highlights, reflection and radiosity must all be considered. Is the person in the picture old or young? Human skin comes in an entire spectrum of flesh tones that vary in saturation and hue not just between people, but across the surface of each person’s skin.”

It’s pretty cool to see these historical figures and moments in a new light…

And Dullaway can also restore personal photos:

Check out her website for more information.

What do you think of these restored images? Better to leave them in the grey, or do you like seeing them in color?

Wow these are pretty amazing! I am really blown away with them. As for prefrence, personally I like to se photos either way. When I do my own photos for my blog I choose if I rather see a photo in black and white. Some good examples are in this link from my Flickr page. http://flic.kr/p/bofwS8 Oh, I guess you can say that our cat matches our carpet a bit too. Just as long as she stays rolled over on to her back.

Color adds immediacy to the images.  I believe it breaks down the veil of history, so that when Anne Frank dies at the hands of other humans, she's REALLY dying at the hands of other humans, not in some far-distant past, but in the present moment, among us.  So if color can lead to a horror that can lead to compassion, then maybe color is a good thing.  (Or not.)

In my oppinion, black and white effects make picture look really special and magic. Show me one pic that is made with no filter and its nt good.I think for most of people...history is made up of  black and white pictures...thats jst part of it.

Awesome work, but certainly Anne Frank looks better in black and white...

Meaning by coloring these pictures we are killing history.

I agree with Robert. These images are amazing and they do come forward into the present here and now with colour. Sometimes it is dificult getting children interested in history this process may help to bring the past closer to them. Especially as what we are today is a result of what happened yesterday!

Some photos look good with color but I have some that I enjoy just as they are.
